Must See: 24 Paintings Of Celebrities As Russian Generals. by The Movie God

Celebrity Russian Generals Banner

At one time or another, you've probably seen one of the paintings that various people in a position of power have had commissioned of themselves. One particularly notable portrait out there is that of the Russian general, which someone has taken to an extremely entertaining new level.

George Dawe, an English portrait artist who has painted 329 portraits of Russian generals, uses a digital copy of his work as a basis to add his friends, family, and some celebrities into the paintings using Photoshop.

So far he's done a bunch of celebrities, and most of them look amazing. If we didn't know who these people were, you wouldn't think twice about whether most of them were a legit Russian general or not. Some look a little off such as Sean Connery, for example, who looks as though he's just passed gas in a room full of people, and is pleased that none of them can figure out who it was.

Windows 8 ditches '80s BIOS boot for streamline UEFI. by Lydia Leavitt

Every time we reboot our computers, that scrolling code takes us right back to the days of War Games and Tab. Bringing us into the 21st century, Microsoft has decided to ditch the old boot by beautifying the whole experience with a graphical menu. Windows 8 will replace the standard fugly BIOS system with a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) -- giving users a high resolution logo and a graphical menu to gaze upon while powering up their PC. Besides just looking better, the menu lets you boot to a different disc, OS or USB drive using pretty pictures and words as prompts. If you're into a little self-inflicted eye torture, you can always pull up the command prompt menu from nightmares past. Check out the throwback video tribute to the computers of yesteryear after the break.Continue reading Windows 8 ditches '80s BIOS boot for streamline UEFI

Report: Apple to hold media event on October 4th, Tim Cook to unveil iPhone 5. by Amar Toor

Report: Apple to hold media event on October 4th, Tim Cook to unveil iPhone 5:

We have yet to receive official word on this, but All Things Digital is reporting today that Apple's next big media event will be held on October 4th, where freshly minted CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil the iPhone 5. Sources close to the situation say Cook will be the main presenter at the event, with execs Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue playing supporting roles. This would mark the first time that Cook has actually led an Apple event, adding an extra wrinkle of significance to an already highly anticipated occasion. The site's sources went on to say that the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase "within a few weeks" of the announcement, though All Things Digital acknowledges that the exact date of its unveiling is still subject to change. As always, we'll be sure to keep you posted as soon as we hear more.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich Unofficial Launcher and Screenshots [Download]. by Cory Gunther

Android Ice Cream Sandwich Unofficial Launcher and Screenshots [Download]:

Before we get started what we have here are screenshots of Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, or at least the launcher running on a phone. This is an unofficial launcher of Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich made by a few awesome developers over at XDA and we have some pictures for you and a video.

We are still looking for any details as to what all this contains but from what we are hearing and seeing this is a 3rd party launcher made from previous leaked screenshots, as well as rumors of what Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich will contain. What these smart developers have done is copied the images from the leaked ICS screenshots and added some settings and options based on a few rumors and developed a pretty awesome and real looking home replacement launcher for Android based on ICS. I’ve quickly installed this to my phone and so far it looks awesome, this is only currently an alpha build and they have some work to do, but so far I love it. Screen animations while scrolling needs some improvement but other than that this is quite impressive. Hitting the multi-tasking button doesn’t bring up actual previously launched apps like Honeycomb, rather a populated list. That and the settings button doesn’t work. ICS 2.4 Launcher alpha hands-on
For more details and pictures regarding this awesome launcher head to XDA forums and join in on the discussion. — Thanks @htcclay

Cool tree Houses

Tree Houses:

Tree houses are impractically romantic. There is no one book on how to make this recurring romance as practical as possible, but these two books by Peter Nelson contain the best suggestions and useful advice for building a real live-in tree house I’ve seen so far. The Treehouse Book has lots of fabulous examples in the US and a few chapters on how-to. His follow-up book, New Treehouses of the World, gathers inspirational examples from Thailand, New Zealand and other spots with tree-house culture, and has a short chapter on new tree-house technology. Main thing to remember when building a tree house is that trees move, over minutes and years. It’s closer to building a boat in the air. That why there’s plenty ideas in these books for any small house, even those not arboreal.

New Treehouses of the World

2009, 223 pages

$25

Available from Amazon

Sample excerpts:

Trees in the northwest grow surprising quickly, so I prefer a GL (Garnier Limb) with a longer stem, the part of the GL that sticks out from the tree. While trees grow taller only at their tips, they grow in girth all long their length. As a tree puts on rings it envelops the GL, making the artificial limb even stronger. The tree will eventually push a beam out along the stem of the GL (the reason I prefer a longer stem) in much the same way the tree's roots might lift a heavy concrete sidewalk.

A "heavy limb," also designed by Greewood, holds up a bucket-style bracket attached to a large glue-laminated beam. There are numerous styles of artificial limbs, or tree anchor bolts (TABs).

An elegant platform takes shape around the old-growth Sitka spruce. Occasionally a tree will resist a building project, but this magnificent specimen remained calm and allowed us to proceed without protest.
